More information will follow as plans are finalized. Our retreat is tentatively planned for the weekend of February 10th-11th, 2012 (Friday evening and Saturday morning/afternoon). If you are aware of any major conflicts with school activities (ie- “Saturday School” for CRCT preparation, etc) please notify the DRE asap. (Note- Date was revised/changed 8/25/2010 cg)
LETTER TO THE BISHOP (Additional information to follow), first draft due February 15th, 2012 . Final draft due date TBA. Note- Anyone who does not fulfill this requirement can not/ will not be presented to the Bishop for Confirmation.
These letters are to be turned in to the DRE (Cyndy Glasscock), and at which time they will be reviewed by the DRE, the Confirmation Catechists and possibly the Pastor prior to submission to the Bishop.
Parent involvement will be essential. These letters must be typed and well written. A very specific format must be followed, per the Bishop's office. The topic and format will be presented from the Bishop's office and we will publish this information on the parish web site once we receive it. The students will also be given the information in their class.
Please expect the papers to be marked up for re-work and corrections- save an electronic copy so that the paper doesn't have to be retyped from scratch. Although individual letters are not “right' or “wrong”, any letter that does not completely answer the subject question or that is disorganized or disrespectful will be returned to be corrected. A returned paper is not a sign of disrespect for a student's individual view, but please know that all letters are expected to be respectful, well written, and complete.

Role of the Adult Family Member: 1. Models the commitment to personal prayer, community worship, and ministry expected of a mature Christian.
2. The Family assumes responsibility to assist the candidate in meeting the program’s attendance and service requirements.
3. Agrees to help the candidate process the experience of the journey – enters into positive dialogue with the candidate, prays for and with the candidate, is willing to share his or her personal faith story with the candidate.
4. Is willing to step in for the sponsor at any time if the sponsor is unable to fulfill his or her ommitment.
Role of the Sponsor/Mentor:
-
Models the commitment to personal prayer, community worship, and ministry expected of a mature Christian.
-
Agrees to attend specific sessions with the candidate.
-
Willingly shares his of her faith story with the candidate in both formal and informal settings.
-
Supports the candidate during the journey of preparation through ongoing dialogue, notes of encouragement, and a willingness to listen to the concerns and hopes of the candidate.
-
Prays for and with the candidate. The candidate’s sponsor must be a confirmed, practicing Catholic, sufficiently mature (at least 17 years of age, though we prefer a more mature adult for this role), and not prohibited by law from serving in this capacity. The sponsor presents the candidate to the Bishop for the anointing and with the help of the Holy Spirit will continue to guide the newly confirmed in the future. Parents may not be a sponsor for their own child.
REMEMBER- You are still fulfilling the promises that you made for your child at Baptism......your role is to continue raising your child in the faith of the Church.
So, what’s the difference between a Mentor and a Sponsor and, How do I know which one my child needs?
Answer: Every Confirmation Candidate needs a Sponsor! The Sponsor is that wonderful and faithful Catholic adult that your child looks up to (besides his/her wonderful parents!) Their sponsor will stand up with them at their Confirmation when the Bishop bestows the sacrament on them. Please choose a Sponsor quickly and get their consent to fill this role.
But, not every Confirmation Candidate neds a Mentor! There will be times during the year when the Sponsor will be called upon to attend special events or classes with the student. The only students who need Mentors are those whose Sponsors live out of town. Your child needs someone locally that they can question and talk to about their faith (besides Teacher or Mom & Dad). The sponsor fills that need…but if the sponsor lives out of town, a local Mentor can be a good “stand –in” for the Sponsor. The Mentor will be someone the Confirmandi can reach anytime with their questions. Although a parent can be a mentor for their own child, it is preferable that another adult friend assume that role.
(NOTE: the Mentor will not be in the Confirmation Mass…It is the Sponsor who stands with the Candidate during Confirmation. The only time a Mentor might be part of the Confirmation Mass is if they stand in as a proxy for an absent Sponsor. If a Mentor is chosen by the student it would be very appropriate for that Mentor to also be invited to attend the Confirmation Liturgy.
